Inspection, maintenance and repair of sealant joints
Durability of sealants under normal weather circumstances can vary from 5 to more than 30 years, depending the type. This means with a good functioning and application of the sealant replacement is only mandatory after several years. In this period situations asking for repairs or “early” total replacement of sealants might occur.
This can be caused by:
Detachment of sealant from surface
Growth of fungus on sealant joints,
Damage by constructional mistakes or overpressure
Degradation by chemicals
Damage by animals like mice and birds
As the sealant mostly has the function to keep moisture out of the building construction it is of great importance to signal and repair joints on time to prevent further damage. Although these leakages get visible at rainy periods, it is recommended to have regularly inspections to prevent damage.
